the university of nottingham

No current updates for the time being!

I'm back from my visit to nottingham uni - and what a fab time I had! After a lot of fuss over the travel arrangements (apparently the ticket I bought wasn't valid until after 7:30PM, which resulted in me sitting in a coffee shop for four hours ) I finally got to Nottingham, where I stayed overnight in a little hotel near to the university. That was very nice, and I discovered that I quite enjoy staying in hotels by myself (I like the solitude and quiet of being on my own sometimes.) Unfortunately, I had an early rise the next day, and due to my neighbours in other rooms making an inconsiderate level of noise, I didn't get that much sleep.

The university itself was jaw-droppingly amazing - previously I had not been overly enthusiastic about nottingham but a good look around the Contemporary Chinese Studies department and a presentation by one of its professors showed me that it was actually very impressive! I joined some people who'd visited the Chinese departmental talk for a stroll around university park campus where I looked at the accomodation (quite nice actually, but I think I'd fancy an en-suite!) and then at the Portland Building, which housed the Student Union and various shops and banks (I found it amazing that they had so much stuff in that one building - you wouldn't even need to leave campus for groceries and household shopping!) I had lunch there and was pleased with the prices and quality of the campus food. I also really enjoyed the friendly atmosphere - for a top university it really didn't feel too imposing and I felt very welcome there. I'm definitely applying for nottingham on my ucas form.

Of course, I've not got anything to compare nottingham to just yet - but I'm going to soas tomorrow morning to look around as well, so hopefully that will give me a bigger insight into university life elsewhere. To be honest, though, I'm not overly keen on the idea of being a student in London as everything is extremely expensive... it is the #2 most expensive city in the world, after all!
